What To Expect During a Winter Storm

When kids hear “snow day!” they cheer and head outside to play. But as the owner or manager of a commercial property, you know your day will be full of enormous challenges — especially if you’re not sure what to expect from your snow and ice management company.

At Landscape America, we know winter weather can be unpredictable, but snow and ice management shouldn’t be. That’s why we make sure our clients know exactly what to expect when faced with a winter storm or other snow event.

Here is how our crews respond before, during and after a major snow event.

1. The calm before the storm...

Preparation for a winter storm or snow event starts long before the first snowflake hits the ground — it starts the moment you have a snow and ice management plan in place.

You’ll be assigned an account manager who will be your point of contact and will be available to you 24/7 during a major snow event.

Before the snow season starts, our team will do a thorough site inspection of your property to make sure your property is ready for winter. This includes checking for things such as:

  • Adequate signage and landscape lighting
  • Clear pavement markings
  • Potential hazards (fallen branches, rotting tree limbs, etc.)
  • Ensuring your irrigation system is properly prepared

Once you know your property is ready, you can breathe a little easier.

2. Keeping ahead of the storm with storm alerts...

We subscribe to Weatherworks, a third-party meteorological firm that monitors the weather in real-time using state-of-the-art equipment.

When a storm is brewing, they issue a storm alert 24 to 48 hours before it hits. As the storm moves closer, we’ll receive a second update, with more updates as the storm progresses.

During this time, our crews are on the alert 24/7 so they’re ready for action once we’ve been alerted about the weather. Our equipment is always ready too — we perform regular maintenance on all our snow removal equipment and make sure they’re gassed up and ready to go.

3. Battling the storm...

Once the storm is in full swing and snow and ice start to accumulate, our crew will be dispatched to your property.

Once they arrive at your property, they will get to work opening throughways, creating paths on sidewalks and maintaining emergency accesses. Plowing will continue throughout the duration of the storm, and specialized applications of brine, salt and/or sand will be applied when deemed necessary.

Our crew will work tirelessly throughout the storm to ensure your property remains safe and clear, but keep in mind full clean-up won’t occur until after the snow event has ended.

And it doesn’t matter which type of contract you have with us — you can expect the same high level of service.

4. Cleaning up after the storm has passed...

After the storm has passed and the snow has stopped falling, our crew will return to clear all walkways, paths, driveways and parking areas, and further de-icing materials will be applied to icy surfaces.

Landscape America communicates to the crew which areas on your property they are responsible for clearing, based on the parameters outlined in your contract.

The final clean-up occurs within 24 hours of the storm’s passing and includes final touch-ups and a quality check by your snow manager. This includes:

  • Ensuring all paths, sidewalks, driveways and sidewalks are clear and ice-free (in areas stipulated in your contract)
  • Accumulated snow being moved off-site (if applicable)
  • Post-storm reports sent by email

The post-storm report — certified by Weatherworks — will be available to you within three or four days of the event. It gives you a meteorologist-approved, quality-controlled explanation of everything that happened during the weather event. Included in this report are:

  • Start & end times of the storm
  • Precipitation type & intensity include rain, drizzle, snow, sleet and freezing rain
  • Temperature data
  • Wind speeds, gusts & drifts

This certified report provides a level of accuracy we wouldn’t be able to guarantee you on our own and prevents any billing disputes that may occur.
